where do we belong?
I’ve always had a discomfort around the use of “digital art” ,my gut feeling is that it is the contemporary version of “computer art”; genre in aesthetic and process. but so many other things are actually art made with digital tools and are left out no? primarily thinking of video but also sound art, music, and a lot of other interdisciplinary mixed-media processes.
on the other hand, I just looked at a video from 2015 we never exhibited/released. It’s a weird one but I really like it. feels like 10 years ago the expectations of digital art were absolutely more about high-res computing, new tech. This video is very analog glitchy and it made me realize how the general art public is more used to seeing media that is pixelated, dirty, low-tech and there’s charm and authenticity to it in a way? and that is thanks to more variety in practices and more visibility.
I always like the term Media Art, because it is to me a continuation of Material-Based Art. how about you?

I have been thinking about this as well for a while, and i think there are artists that are obviously ‘digital artist’ who are working on the digital medium only, and artists that are obviously operating around a physical medium (e.g. painter, sculptors, etc), and then there is this interesting category of artists whose work and whole “artistic demarche” is explictily to bridge between the physical and the digital (e.g. William Mapan, Aurèce Vetier, etc. ). the horrible name for it could be “phygital” artists, but that’s horrible -- let’s find a better name for it? :)
for our own practice we are very interested in the materiality of each media with or without a physical component. and when we work with tangible media it is through a lot of exploration and understanding of the material. what artists that are not nft artists can you think of?
